Placing multiple donkeys in a pasture increases the likelihood that they will bond with each other and tend to ignore the livestock. Coyotes are much smarter than donkeys and most other animals. They didn’t get to be the Apex Predator in the Food Chain by being stupid. A small pack of two or three coyotes can “work” a donkey away from cattle or livestock in order for another pack member to make the kill. Landowner’s and Livestock owners severely underestimate the intelligence of these Predators. On pastures larger than 8-10 acres. the only successful control method is shooting the coyotes or trapping them out.
I explained to this landowner that 50 acres. was way too much pasture for the donkey to be able to cover. He wanted me to come up and trap the beasts out because, as he said, “I cannot AFFORD to have coyotes killing my CALVES.” So I ask you, land and cattle farm owner, do you REALLY know EXACTLY how many calves are being killed by coyotes on your Farm? I can tell you the answer is No. There is no telling how many newborn calves are dropped during the day and night on farms all across Georgia, and are killed and dragged out of the pasture by Coyotes. You are losing much more money than you realize whether you will believe it or not. I tried explaining this to the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association years ago and received no response. Their apparent “head in the sand” approach is costing their members hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
I don’t continue to try to convince people or organizations with that type of my way or the highway mentality. If a landowner will not listen to sound scientific research and experience about Predation of his Livestock from a State Certified Wildlife Trapper, then the Truth is, he will unfortunately, continue to lose money hand over fist. I am here to help landowner’s who run their cattle operation as a Business Enterprise and understand the business side of their INVESTMENT. I can show them how I can substantially increase the profit margin of their bottom line if they are willing to listen to the research and think realistically. More calves to sell means more MONEY IN YOUR POCKET. If you as a landowner do not have a Predator Control Program as the main support leg of your Cattle Breeding or Beef business, then it is clear that you do not understand how much money you are losing. Your CATTLE OR LIVESTOCK ARE YOUR........INVESTMENT.” Why would you knowingly allow a 4 legged Predator steal money from your enterprise and livelihood on an ongoing basis?
I wish one or more of these types of Livestock owners would explain to me their rationale for this. Especially since the services can be TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
